Guide to Manchester University: Gigs - Pobice

Here is the second part of the guide, a bit a late but never mind, just means I can put more information in it.

Venues - There are three main music venues near the university. They are
1. Manchester Academy - A Large music venue next to the Student Union building. Bands such as the Shirehorses, Mansun, Embrace, Thin Lizzy and Reef are playing there this term (or have already played). Most people might not have herd of these bands, but there are some big names playing there, but I don't like them so they don't get listed.
2. Main Debating Hall (Academy 2) - A Medium sized venue on the second floor of the union. This has a small stage but is well equipped. Bands such as The Delgados and Idlewild have played there this term and were very good indeed.
3. Hop and Grape - A small place on the third floor of the student union, has a very large bar for the size of the venue and often for some of the smaller bands who play there it can seem like there are more bar staff than people watching the band
Drink - All of the venues I have been to have a bar. In the Main Debating Hall and the Academy the main bar is separate for the actual hall, but this is no big problem as it is a matter of walking through a door to get to it. The Academy also has a small bar at the side in the middle, but it is a very small ones and only sells cans and bottles. The Hop and Grape however has a bar across the entire far end of it. 9far been in the sense that it is in the end not that its far away from the front. The best strategies for drinking is to get something, watch the support, go to the loo and get another at the end of the support. repeat this when there is more support bands. Starting before is a good strategy but drink lots during the gig is bad (if there pints) as this means u need the loo and have to miss some of the music (although with some of the support bands this could be a good thing.)
Food - After the gig you will need something to eat. The best thing to do is head down oxford Road away from the city centre (stay with me it about 2 min away from the academy) and go to a place called Abduls and get a kebab to eat. If you are walking into Rusholme on your way back you can always get another Kebab there. Oh yeah and don't get just chilli sauce on its own as a topping for the kebab - its a Bad idea trust me.
Moshpit - For certain bands near the stage will be a "Mosh Pit". For those of you who don't know what it is, it's where people jump up and down a lot to the music and occasionally fall over. Also this is where the crowd surfing goes on, To go crowd surfing make sure all valuables are safe inc you're watch. Next get someone to give you a leg up and fall face up into the crowd and they will carry you along. Great fun but watch out as injuries can occur.
