Burning Books - The Puppet Master
| 1) | Pobice (2011-08-04 19:16:25) | Can you read the journals on either device first? Secondly with a fondle slab you might get easily distracted. |
| 2) | The Puppet Master (2011-08-05 12:03:19) | You can download PDF's to kindles can't you? and yes distraction is a very real threat. Spmetimes it is such a chore being such a neo-ludite! |
| 3) | Pobice (2011-08-05 20:25:18) | I assume so - but as I've got a few paper books still to read I haven't really looked into them |
| 4) | The Businessman (2011-08-07 15:26:50) | Get a tablet, yes you'll be distracted playing Tetris, tweetering and watching endless clips of Man vs Food on You Tube, but it'll be more fun and your only doing plant science. I mean what do you need to know? They're green and like water and sunlight:- there write that down and you've got a double first. |
| 5) | junior (2011-08-07 18:31:05) | If you want to read stuff from places other than Amazon, especially journals, papers, books from Project Gutenberg, then I would avoid the Kindle. The Kindle is good for just about reading Kindle format books, that‘s it. EPUB (an open ebook format) books have to be converted, and the Kindle does not support PDF reflowing (text is not reflowed to fit to screen size, so the text is too small or you are subjected to horizontal scrolling). Then there is being sucked in by Amazon‘s/publishers‘ (Amazon may occasionally complain that publishers force them into it) obnoxious DRM if you do purchase any of their books for the Kindle (and worse, you get Kindle versions of books costing the same as or more than paperbacks). Damn it, this was supposed to be a comment, not a rant. Anyhow, iRiver recently released the Story HD, which syncs with Google Books, looks like it has a nice higher resolution display, and can read EPUB books. Unfortunately, according to this Ars Technica article, the Story HD is not without its own problems. |
| 6) | Pobice (2011-08-07 23:15:50) | TOT: Man vs Food - what an oddly compelling program. Managed to watch a fair few of them while I was in hospital. Some of the food looked pretty tasty just 1000x big portion size than I could manage. WARNING: I was taking some pretty hefty drugs at the time so that may have clouded my judgment a little :D |
| 7) | Pobice (2011-08-07 23:19:37) | re iRiver devices. I have two Media Players from them - one a glorified USB stick, the other a iPod like device. Both still going strong after many years of use. The only thing I've had to fix is to replace the HD in the H340 after dropping it too many times while in use |
| 8) | Pobice (2011-09-25 15:08:10) | I've got a kindle now. The few PDF's I've tried to read on it didn't come out well. But with a bit of software called Calibre you can convert them to an e-reader format on the kindle. One good thing is that you can email your Kindle word documents and amazon will convert them to the kindle format. If you have the 3G version use @free.kindle.com to avoid the fee. |
| 9) | Pobice (2011-09-25 15:20:03) | re Junior: I haven't had a problem with loading up content from other sites. I've already got a few books from Gutenberg. If in the right format I believe you can just drop the files on the kindle (it shows up as a mass storage device). You can also take files off this way. Yeh unfortunately it doesn't do epub but conversion is easy. I tend to use Calibre to send files to it. It can use the send via email function so you don't even have to bother plugging it in. It can also take a rss feed and turn it into a ebook. Great for reading sites with longer articles. As for the iriver its a good device, but the software sucks currently. Until they update it or we get open firmware for it (bookbox anyone) I wouldn't bother. |
| 10) | The Puppet Master (2011-09-26 09:17:48) | I have a kindle now, I am about to attempt to use it for the first time *grabs hammer* |
| 11) | Pobice (2011-10-15 17:14:55) | Man v Food is showing on Dave if anyone hasn't experienced it yet. |
| 12) | J. Sheridan (2011-12-29 13:02:04) | I prefer 'Will it Blend?' Which is a valid question to ask. Matter of fact he did test an Ipad in a blender. Most magnificent man on the internet. |
| 13) | Pobice (2011-12-31 11:12:13) | Have they tried blending a blender yet? |
| 14) | J.Sheridan (2011-12-31 13:31:33) | I think that might cause the end of all civilisation! Though I also think that is what the Hadron collider is secretly for. It's global science's ultimate version of 'Will it Blend?' where the test material is antimatter, black holes and fairies. |
